Top247 WR Ashton Cozart flips from Oklahoma to Oregon

Following a weekend official visit to Oregon, Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus Top247 2023 receiver Ashton Cozart announced his commitment to the Ducks.

Cozart had been a verbal to Oklahoma going back to February. He becomes commit No. 5 for head coach Dan Lanning and the first-year Oregon staff in the rising senior cycle.

“The PNW is home for me,” Cozart told 247Sports over the weekend.

“Being here right now just feels right. The Dan Lanning era and staff is special and it can not be explained.

“It’s special.”

Cozart shows some special ability on film. As a junior he used his 10.74 speed in the 100m dash to turn 36 receptions into 680 yards and 11 touchdowns. He’ll play in the Under Armor All-American game following his senior season.

“He’s a different kid than anybody I trained in this class because of his height and he has long arms, long torso and he has speed,” trainer Margin Hooks said. A standout pass catcher at BYU, Hooks has trained some of the best receivers in the country over the last several cycles. “It’s a plus for him because he can high point the ball. He can do things a small guy can do but do things a big guy can do. It’s a mixture. I love the kid’s aggressiveness and competitiveness. In college I think he’ll be a home run hitter, someone that changes the field in an instant. ”

Cozart is tabbed by the Top247 as the nation’s No. 17 receiver and No. 140 prospect overall.

“The multi-sport data suggests that Cozart has plenty of developmental upside,” 247Sports National Analyst and Lone Star State native Gabe Brooks said. “We look for verified speed, whether track or testing and he has done both with impressive numbers. He’s been really good in 7-on-7 context and had an encouraging junior year and I would expect him to be the main attraction this fall for his team. “

Oregon has a need at receiver on the roster and they’re addressing it in spades with Cozart joining fellow blue-chipper Jurrion Dickey, the No. 9 receiver in the Top247. Dickey is an explosive playmaker that shines in all facets of the game and will play in the All-American Bowl.

“They’re getting two guys that compliment each other extremely well,” 247Sports National Analyst Cooper Petagna said. “You have a big body in Dickey that’s not only dynamic at the catch point but as a run after catch threat as well. Then you have the speed and playmaking ability of Ashton Cozart who’s not only a vertical threat but a guy that is versatile and can play inside and out. The idea to build a receiver room is like a basketball team and these are two guys that work off each other. ”

“Any time you can add multiple offensive weapons with the physical specs and verified athleticism and layered context that these guys have, it’s a good thing,” Brooks added.

Oregon also added Top247 receiver Kyler Kasper to the 2022 class, a reclassification in the 2023 cycle. Like Dickey and Cozart, he was also an All-American as Lanning, Junior Adams and company are setting a standard for the caliber of pass catcher they’re going to take under this regime in Eugene.
