Jonathan Coachman is joined by expert sports bettors John Bollman, Allie O’Neill and Zack Cimini on The Early Edge podcast. They give you their best bets for Major League Baseball, the NHL and the NBA for Monday, May 23.
Coach kicks things off with the SportsLine Play of the Day: The Blues (+1.5 goals at -170) to cover the spread against the Avalanche in Game 4 of their Western Conference second-round playoff series (9:30 pm ET). “Yes, that’s a little juicy,” he says. “But in the NHL playoffs, one goal can be everything.”
Bollman is up next with an MLB play. He likes the Cardinals (-120) to beat the Blue Jays in the opener of their two-game series (7:45 pm ET). “The Blue Jays struggle against right-handed pitchers, and they will face one of the toughest in the league in Miles Mikolas,” John says. “In May, the Cardinals have the third-highest weighted on-base average in the league, while the Blue Jays have the third-lowest. The Cardinals also have a much better bullpen, and they did not have to use it yesterday in the blowout (win). “
O’Neill follows with a Major League Baseball play of her own. She likes Over 7.5 runs (+105) in that Cardinals-Blue Jays contest. “The Over is 5-3 in (Jose) Berrios’ starts,” Allie says. “He really has been a hit-or-miss pitcher. The Blue Jays have not been scoring as much, but we have seen the Cardinals really have been able to put up runs. Their last five games have gone Over.”
Coach jumps back in with a play in MLB: Over 9 runs (-108) in the Cubs-Reds game (6:40 pm ET). “Neither one of these pitchers has an ERA south of 5.00,” he says. “Drew Smyly last time out, three earned runs in 4 ⅓ (innings). Vladimir Gutierrez – 0-5, 8.65 ERA. They play in a bandbox. The Reds are playing much better than of late, also. They’re scoring runs . “
Cimini wraps things up with an NBA play. He likes Boston’s Grant Williams to go Over his yet-to-be-announced point total in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Celtics and the Heat (8:30 pm ET). “When (the Celtics) have needed a big game to bounce back from a big loss, he has been the player – at least the role player – that has stepped up,” Zack says. “The shots are going to be there.… Williams is a guy that’s been somewhat consistent, that can step up, especially when we know Jayston Tatum and Jaylen Brown are going to get extensive defense.… I’m going to anticipate this being between 8.5 and 9.5 points, as it’s been throughout most of the playoffs. “
