Jurgen Klopp has claimed that Liverpool’s game away at Tottenham in December was “very, very strange”. Playing out a 2-2 draw in north London on a day when both sides had to do without a handful of key players, there were a couple of notable incidents in the game, including Andy Robertson’s dismissal and Harry Kane avoiding the same fate.
Looking set to leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with all three points, Son Heung-min denied Liverpool victory in the final 15 minutes of the contest after capitalizing on an Alisson error. Speaking about the outcome of the Premier League title race after taking it to the final day with a 2-1 victory at Southampton on Tuesday evening, Klopp namechecked the draws away at Chelsea and Spurs when discussing his hopes for the weekend.
“We all know it is that close, so many things happen during the season but we never give up, that is how it is,” he told Sky Sports after the win on the south coast. “The games away at Chelsea and Tottenham, we did not have to win, but if you watch the Tottenham game, that game was very, very strange. That’s it, here we are and we will not give up. We will give it a try and it is difficult enough against Wolves but we will still give it a try. “
When speaking to the media in his post-match conference at St Mary’s post-match, the German again alluded to the draw at Tottenham as well as Harry Kane not receiving his marching orders for a challenge on Robertson.
“I have no idea what happens on Sunday, to be honest. It was game 18 tonight, right, from the second part of the season? We won 15, drew three,” he explained, as reported by Liverpool’s official website. “Against City we know we were lucky at City, that was not the best, not a good game.
“Against Tottenham and Chelsea, these two away games, when we had our corona outbreak, when we played … I love Tyler Morton. I love him. But he played on six at Tottenham. In that moment we were in a good shape , and then we get these little problems. I do not see other teams do not have problems, just our problems. So, we could have … this game was the situation when Robbo got the red card and Harry Kane didn ‘ t get the red card.Just to think back.
“Of course, these things happen throughout the season, but for our story we did not think about it for a second. It’s now just drawing three times, winning 15 is madness. Absolute madness. But it’s the only way to keep the distance like this to City.
“There are no regrets at all, the boys throw everything on the pitch. Again, nine changes and then this kind of game, it’s really exceptional, it’s really exceptional. I do not think anybody expected something like that, and the boys did it anyway, that’s really great. “
