2022 PGA Championship leaderboard, winner: Justin Thomas edges Will Zalatoris in playoff for second major win

TULSA, Okla. – The 2022 PGA Championship was decided in a playoff Sunday with Justin Thomas edging Will Zalatoris by a stroke after a total of 75 holes to capture the second Wanamaker Trophy of Thomas’ career. It was the first playoff at a major since the 2017 Masters and the first at a PGA Championship since Keegan Bradley won in 2011.

Thomas, who trailed by seven strokes entering the day, posted a 3-under 67 for his first 18 holes on Sunday at Southern Hills, missing a birdie putt on the 18th that would have ultimately given him the outright win. Zalatoris was up-and-down with a 1-over 71, draining a 10-foot, 10-inch par putt on the last to tie Thomas in the clubhouse and force a playoff.

The duo played holes 13, 17 and 18 in a three-hole aggregate playoff with both scoring birdie on the first, Thomas edging Zalatoris with a birdie on the second and both scoring par on the last to make Thomas the PGA champion.

Thomas, in winning this PGA Championship, became just the sixth golfer in history to come back from seven strokes or more in a final round to capture a major title. He entered the day with a 1.9% chance to win the Wanamaker Trophy, according to DataGolf.

“It was a bizarre day. I definitely crossed one off the list. I’ve never won a tournament shanking a ball on Sunday. That was a first, and man, I’d really like it to be a last,” Thomas said after his victory. “… I was asked earlier in the week, ‘What lead is safe?’ And I said, ‘No lead.’ This place is so tough, but if you hit the fairways, you can make birdies. I stayed so patient, and I just can not believe I found myself in a playoff. “

Zalatoris, meanwhile, achieved a second-place finish at a major for the second time in his career (2021 Masters). It was also his fifth top-eight finish in his last seven major starts.

  • Hole 1 (par-5 13th): Thomas found the rough off the tee but hit his third shot 6 feet from the hole for a clutch birdie putt. Zalatoris looked to have bested JT by making it on the green in two but was forced to tap in for birdie after a long eagle putt slid wide left.
  • Hole 2 (par-4 17th): Thomas drove the green off the tee in spectacular fashion, while Zalatoris attempted the same only to fortunately land just feet from a greenside bunker. Zalatoris missed a 12-foot putt and settled for par, while JT calmly knocked his 56-foot eagle putt within 4 feet for a birdie and the lead.
  • Hole 3 (par-4 18th): Both men made it on the green in two, though Zalatoris’ approach slid down a ridge to put him further from the hole. Zalatoris putted to within a couple feet, while Thomas knocked his to inside a foot for a par putt and the championship.

Mito Pereira, the 54-hole leader, stayed in front nearly the entire final round on Sunday. A birdie putt on the 17th, which would have given him a two-stroke lead, stopped a half rotation short of the hole. After settling for par, he found the water on his tee shot from the 18th and double-bogeyed the final hole to not only give away his potential victory but miss the playoff entirely.
